A graphic designer is an artist who communicates a set of objectives through the combination of type and imagery. They are a problem solver, not in the sense that there is something wrong that needs to be fix, but that there is something that does not exist that needs to be created. It is the job of a graphic designer to work with clients to set objectives and then work to achieve those objectives. Resulting in a piece of visual communication that incorporates typography and imagery.
To be impactful and successful a graphic designer must contain several attributes. First, they must be driven and have a passion for their work without these they will not be able to handle the highly competitive field which is graphic design. Second, they must be inquisitive asking questions not just of their clients, but also of the world. By questioning the world around them they will be able to continue to move forward with their designs discovering new ways to communicate visually. This will also help them as they do research for a project causing them to find new ways to view their projects. Finally, they must enjoy learning, the field of graphic design is changing from a print based world to a digital world and more is being required of the designer. This means that designers will be required to stay current to the ever-changing technology.
In ten years Graphic Design will have changed drastically from what it is today. Already more design is being done for the web, phones and other portable digital devices. In stores monitors are being displayed in aisle to promote the sale of a certain product. Print media is starting to fade away and in ten years it will all but be demolished. Almost all design will become digitally based and designers will either need to learn how to adapt, by learning the new software, or by hiring experts in those areas.
As a student I need to focus on learning the principles of design and how to use them effectively no matter what media it is produced in. I need to make sure that my portfolio shows that I am versatile and that I am able to adapt with the changes in technology. I also need to stay current with the software that I use and make sure that I know something about web design so that I can work with computer scientists and at least be able to communicate with them when working on a project together.
